WLW Wednesday #6

WLW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by the dynamic duo Sasha and Amber @ Sasha and Amber Read! I will be attempting to do this meme fortnightly (as in, once every two weeks). The goal of this meme is to recap sapphic books we have read and loved, and thereby encourage ourselves to read even more sapphic books.

I have read 2 sapphic books since last doing this meme.

First of all, I apologize for how late I’m posting this on Wednesday. I’ve been having a crap week for a variety of reasons, and this post just slipped my mind until the last minute. Apologies aside, the first sapphic book I read was…

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo

We get a legendary wlw couple in the tiger-woman Ho Thi Thao and her lover, Dieu the scholar. This is fantasy, obviously. There is also some nonbinary rep here in the form of Chih the historian, who simultaneously records and tells the story of Ho Thi Thao and Dieu while under some immense pressure. The book reads like a dark fairytale, but there is a (debated) happy ending.

The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz

This next one is a sci-fi novella about an AI technician named Clara falling for an autonomous robot named Sal. Both characters are asexual. This one has a lot of social commentary about marginalized groups in a society and how they’re stigmatized by the majority group, which I was not expecting in a romance book, but here we are. There are also some themes about grief and what it means to move on after immense emotional loss. I had a few problems with the characterization in this one, but it was nothing major and was overall an enjoyable read.

And that’s it! Again, happy new year, and I hope we all read a ton of sapphic books in 2021!
